Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, an ironworker, as well as Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the eldest out of six kids. The father of Nancy was a musician and would play records in the family. This had a great influence in her early years. As a young girl she was already able to establish the impression of who she was and what she hoped to accomplish. Church choirs helped develop her talent. After high school the singer began appearing frequently on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. At the same age when she was working, she began performing in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 at the time she completed high school. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for one semester, Nancy left to be a professional performer. She recorded her first record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy released her first album with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball adderley advised her to travel to New York in order to advance her career. She went to The Big Town, New York in 1959. Within a couple of weeks the manager of Adderley was impressed by her voice and hired her. It was a contract by Capitol Records in the year 1960. That year, she released her first single. Guess who? Her albums were a hit and Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. After Adderley's influences she shifted her focus her focus from R&B into jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and led to her rise up on the charts. In 1963, she scored her biggest hit with Tell Me the Truth. Following that year, she received an invitation to perform at the New York's Coconut Grove, the most sought-after nightclub in America.
