Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson, a jazz performer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Chillicothe, Ohio 20 February 1937, to Olden Wilson an ironworker who had worked for a long period as housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest child of six. The father of Nancy was a music lover and played records at home. This had a great influence in her early years. As young as four, Nancy knew that her future was as a singer. She was able to develop her talents through singing in the church choir. She won a TV-talent show in her 15th year and then began performing regularly on the tv show Skyline Melodies while still in high school. At nightclubs, she began working at age 15. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for one year, before deciding to sing. In 1956 she made her first album with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut album through Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball addederley recommended that she relocate in New York for her career, and in 1959 she relocated to The Big Town. In just a few months, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative was able to hear her perform and promptly agreed to sign her. Her debut on the recording stage came in the year 1960, with one single following an agreement with Capitol Records. Guess who? Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Initially focusing on blues and rhythm under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B and embraced the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and their 1962 collaboration made her a star. Her breakthrough smash Tell Me the Truth by 1963. The performance led her to a spot in the New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
